What do chickens in Minecraft eat?
If you're imagining throwing them some bread or seeds from random plants, that’s not quite it. Minecraft chickens are a bit more refined than that. They only eat seeds. Yes, those guys are serious about their seed diet. And not just any seeds. You have four options wheat, beetroot, pumpkin, and melon seeds. If you want to grow your chicken army, it is all about the seeds!
Now, let’s dig into how to get these seeds because you’ll need a stash to keep those chickens clucking happily!
Wheat Seeds
Starting with the easiest and most common seeds you'll get your hands on. People who are new to Minecraft and even experienced make wheat seeds the go-to food for their Minecraft chickens.
Wheat Seeds are super easy to find. You get them from breaking Grass blocks. Seriously, just punch some grass. There is a 50% chance that you will get wheat seed each time you do.
If you’re feeling fancy and want more seeds at once, start farming. Wheat crops give you 1 Wheat and up to 3 Seeds when harvested. Also, Village farms usually have Wheat growing, so you can, uh... “borrow” some from the local villagers.
Here’s a pro tip: In Savannah House Chests, you’ve got a 71.7% chance of finding up to 5 Wheat Seeds. That’s a lot of free chicken food right there!
Oh, and by the way, you can also buy Wheat Seeds from the Wandering Trader for 1 Emerald, but let’s be real—don’t waste your hard-earned emeralds on something so easy to get. It’s like paying for dirt.
Beetroot Seeds
Next on the menu are Beetroot Seeds. Chickens like some variety in their diet. Spoiling them with some fancy beetroot seeds is one way to go. However, they’re a little trickier to
Chickens like a bit of variety in their diet, so why not spoil them with some fancy Beetroot Seeds? They’re a little trickier to get, though.
If you’re lucky enough, you might stumble upon a Village farm growing beetroots. Here there is a 10% chance that the seeds are already planted. After it has fully grown, harvest them to obtain one beetroot and approximately 4. This method is the most efficient but it works wonders.
You can buy these seeds from a Wandering trader for 1 Emerald. I’d say this trade is slightly less of a rip-off than the Wheat Seed deal, but still, it’s cheaper to just go farming or exploring.
Melon Seeds
This one is unusual but in the world of Minecraft, chickens love them. Who knew, right?
To get Melon Seeds, you’ll need to break Melon stems. The older the stem, the better chance you have of getting a bunch of seeds (up to 3). Melons grow in Savannah and Desert Village farms, so those are great places to start your search. You can also find Melon stems chilling in Woodland Mansions—because nothing screams “mansion” like a melon patch.
If you’re not up for trekking across biomes, you’ve got another option: Craft a Melon Slice into Melon Seeds. Pop that slice onto a Crafting Table, and bam—1 Melon Slice = 1 Melon Seed.
All the treasure hunters out there have a good chance of finding melon seeds in chests, dungeons, mineshafts, and woodland mansions. However, be careful because you never know what is waiting for you in the dark.
Pumpkin Seeds
Last but not least, we’ve got Pumpkin Seeds. Just like Melon Seeds, these come from stems, and yes, your chickens love them just as much as any other seed.
You can simply break a pumpkin stem and obtain 3 pumpkin seeds. The older the stem the higher the number of seeds you get. Woodland Mansions and Taiga Village farms are great places to find Pumpkin stems. If you’re playing on Bedrock Edition, Snowy Taiga Villages might also have some pumpkin-y goodness for you.
Pumpkin Seeds can also be found as loot in chests. In Taiga Village chests (both Java and Bedrock editions), there’s a solid chance (40-43%) of finding up to 5 Pumpkin Seeds. You can find them in dungeons, mineshafts, and woodland mansions with an 18 to 28% chance of it being there.
Also, if exploration is not your thing, you can cut a whole pumpkin into four pumpkin seeds using a crafting table. Isn't that smooth?
Wrapping Up
There you go! You know what Minecraft chickens prefer to eat and how to get those seeds for them. It is always good to switch up their seed variety because even you would not want to eat the same food every day, would you! From building a farm to creating an army of chickens and feeding them the right foods. We also need to look out for the right seeds so that the chickens remain happy and multiply.
For those running Minecraft, a
reliable hosting server is key to ensuring seamless gameplay, especially when managing large farms or flocks of chickens. A good server host can help prevent lag, ensuring your chickens stay happy and your game runs smoothly.
FAQs
The easiest animal to farm in Minecraft is the chicken. It does not require any food to mature or procreate, in contrast to cows and sheep. Every action taken by the chicken is automated, regardless of its location.
Feed each chicken, one at a time, the seeds you have chosen for your hot bar. Depending on the Minecraft version, you may utilize or feed the chicken's seeds using different game controls. One by one, right-click on the chickens in the Java Edition (PC/Mac).
Chickens now use wheat, melon, and pumpkin seeds. Giving them a variety of seeds is the better way to go about the game.
