Hold onto your swords, exiles! In an alarming twist of fate, the Path of Exile 2 devs at Grinding Gear Games have recently spilled the beans on a significant security breach affecting both Path of Exile 1 and 2 accounts. Earlier this week, the studio revealed that 66 accounts were hacked due to a crafty act of social engineering, targeting a forgotten and unsecured Steam profile linked to an admin account.
Game director Jonathan Rogers explained the depth of the breach, citing a bug in their audit log system. This bug allowed the hacker to reset and delete passwords without a trace, wreaking havoc by setting random passwords on the affected accounts. Thankfully, the Path of exile 2 patch notes have been made tighter than a Death's Oath chest.
However, the breach's severity is not to be taken lightly. The hacker accessed email addresses, Steam IDs, IP addresses, and even shipping addresses of accounts with previous physical purchases. Personal message histories, including those between Grinding Gear Games staff, were also compromised.
Grinding Gear Games is taking this incident seriously, with a heartfelt apology, and promises to enhance security around admin accounts. Measures include banning third-party account links and enforcing stringent IP restrictions. While these steps are reassuring, the damage done is no small matter, and affected players are rightly upset.
For those with Path of Exile accounts, it's a crucial reminder to update your passwords and apply two-factor authentication where possible. Stay vigilant, exiles, and may your loot be ever in your favor!
At an event, the devs announced that the game will have no offline support.
This multiplayer game is free to play and takes 33 hours in length to complete if played in one go.
While Path of Exile 2's storytelling has greatly improved over its predecessor, it still falls short of Diablo 4's cinematic magnificence. If storytelling is important to you, Diablo 4 is the better option.
