The debut of Subnautica 2 shows its first gameplay footage, which gives a peek at what's new in the underwater survival sequel.
The new improved base building mechanics introduced in the developer vlog allowed for the creation of the underwater habitat of modular compartments and superconductive foundations. To help simplify resource gathering, there are new tools, such as a brand-new scanner with radar capabilities. Instead of relying on randomized materials like before, players can now harvest specific resources directly from nodes, which is shown to lean towards a more structured inventory system.
Subnautica 2 also includes multiplayer gameplay where up to four players can explore and survive a new alien ocean planet. This cooperative mode provides something more to the classic solo gameplay experience of Subnautica. Another thing the sequel gives us is new environments and biomes to explore, full of new ecosystems and challenges.
The genetic modification mechanics are, however, unique. Players can absorb alien organisms which genetically alter their ability to adapt to harsh conditions on the planet. This high-risk, high-reward dynamic drives exploration through strategic decisions.
Though there's no officially announced early access release date as of yet, Subnautica 2 will be on PC and Xbox Series X/S sometime around 2025, promising new mechanics, familiar survival mechanics, and a bigger, more replayable world.
Of course, and it also has co op gameplay for up to 4 players.
