Minecraft fans were shocked when the devs unveiled Aotearoa New Zealand DLC which allows players to explore six virtual locations based on famous sites while showcasing the natural scenery and cultural heritage of New Zealand.
The free expansion developed by Piki Studios, Mojang Studios, Tourism New Zealand, and Warner Bros. Pictures brings six iconic New Zealand locations, including Waitomo Caves, Rotorua, Kāpiti Island, Abel Tasman, Tekapo, and Doubtful Sound. Every place within this expansion opens up separate experiences, which include waka paddling in Abel Tasman and both stargazing in Tekapo and learning traditional Māori beliefs through Māori elders.
Players can discover New Zealand's scenic landscape while studying Māori culture in the DLC that develops their understanding of the country's ancestral heritage.
The new DLC arrives at a time when "A Minecraft Movie" will premiere on April 4, 2025, after filming in New Zealand. Through the DLC, both film promotion and destination marketing unite to motivate gamers to visit New Zealand digitally as they might later pursue actual travel to the country.
The free Minecraft expansion includes six representative New Zealand locations and Māori cultural artifacts.
The Minecraft Marketplace offers the DLC for free accessibility to users with Bedrock Edition.
Owners of the waka can paddle it while they explore caves to experience Māori cultural traditions by stargazing.
The film premieres on April 4, 2025, after its production in New Zealand.
