Just recently, a Swedish retailer listed Grand Theft Auto 6 at 1,199 SEK or around $115 USD. The listing perhaps reignited speculation surrounding the game's final price and what it could say about the future of AAA game pricing.
While speculation in the gaming industry and among analysts have suggested that GTA 6 could see release in the U.S. with a $100 price tag, we have no way of knowing what Rockstar and the rest of the Take-Two Interactive team have in store. This would be quite the jump from current major release prices of $69.99, but it isn’t completely out of the question. Game prices have been nudged up in recent years by publishers, including Take 2 Interactive, parent of publisher Rockstar.
However, the $115 that came from the Swedish listing could be used as a placeholder. Before a product’s launch, retailers create listings in advance and often use a product’s estimated price to do so. And while it hasn’t stopped fans from reacting (some frustrated, others a bit accepting), its presence has given them something to discuss. That’s right. We’re talking about GTA 6, a game that has been in the works for nearly a decade, and people expect nothing less than the next step in the gaming scene.
Rockstar hasn’t yet announced its pricing, so everything is rumor and speculation. If GTA 6 does, indeed, come at a price equal to or even exceeding $100, it might well indicate the next direction AAA pricing will take.
Rockstar has yet to share anything about pricing.
This could be a placeholder or the earliest pricing speculation.
Price increases have not been seen on all of the AAA titles, but $100 is still rare.
Likely closer to the game's release date.
