CD Projekt Red’s once controversial RPG Cyberpunk 2077 breaks 30 million sold as a comeback RPG. The figure includes sales of both the base game and the Ultimate Edition, which consists of Phantom Liberty, which has over 8 million copies sold. Even if the game's launch was disastrous in 2020, it only managed to stay afloat due to relentless updates that were completed with the massive 2.0 patch and praised Phantom Liberty DLC, which did restore player trust and critical praise.
According to the CD Projekt Red earnings report, Cyberpunk 2077 and its DLC make up 64% of the company’s Q3 2024 revenue, which is significantly beyond that of its most well-known franchise up to this point, The Witcher series. It’s quite an impressive turnaround, even more so considering the game’s initial backlash, which saw players demanding refunds and a temporary delisting from the PlayStation Store. But in spite of these fixes and expansions, it eventually became a fan favourite and well-loved for its deep storytelling and immersive Night City setting.
Now that the base game is stable, CDPR can get on with work on the next Witcher title (codenamed Polaris) and some very early work on Cyberpunk’s sequel, Project Orion. A MAC port is also in the works, which may increase sales even further. Among the truest tales of resurrection in gaming, Cyberpunk 2077 has surely gone from failure to redemption.
