After much speculation and waiting, Bungie has finally revealed the release date of Marathon, its top secret PvP extraction shooter, pinning it for a September 23, 2025 date alongside a closed Alpha test set to drop April 23. Set on the enigmatic planet of Tau Ceti IV, the game tasks players with taking on cybernetic mercenary roles such as Runners, fighting against other crews and the harshest environmental threats in a high-stakes loot drop environment.
You'll either be killed in battle, leaving behind your gear if you don't extract successfully, or you'll be killed while scavenging for weapons, material and equipment in dynamic zones as a team of up to three people. The Void, Glitch, Locus and Blackbird were previewed as four of six planned Runner classes, all of which will be playable (with no class restrictions) during the Marathon Alpha version. With shared objectives, rescue mechanics, and tactics that emphasize tactical teamwork, Bungie allows players to opt out of crew queues to undergo the lone wolf challenge.
Bungie’s signature gunplay is promised to change with dynamic weather and unpredictable PvP encounters, which promise no two matches play alike. Crossplay and cross-save are confirmed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S; a PlayStation Network account is not required for any non-PlayStation platform, a clear callout to the messiness of the industry as we've seen lately.
The Alpha test starts April 23 2025, with September 23 2025 being the release date.
