Baldur's Gate 3 director discusses why the game did not get a DLC.
It has been announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not have any downloadable content (DLC), confirmed by Larian Studios. The director, Swen Vincke, admitted that although preparations for developing an expansion pack were taken up, it was abandoned because there was no excitement. Vincke noted that the studio appreciates projects driven by passion, “It was apparent that the team was looking at it since we were all obliged, not that we wanted to.”
Larian’s decision to forego DLC shows that they value team welfare over business interests, and authenticity as a game-making process. After making his announcement, Vincke observed "so many elated faces" among the staff, which meant that everybody felt at ease and saw the decision as congruent with the studio.
Fans might get disappointed because there isn’t more stuff, yet Larian is convinced that the game has an even story all by itself. Vincke presented the game as a tale stretching from a beginning to an end, suggesting that extra content would lessen its total impact.
In other words, Larian Studios are interested in going out of the Dungeons & Dragons universe and stepping into exciting new projects. Vincke expressed his enthusiasm of trying out original ideas, which emphasizes studio’s interest in novel rather than repetitive ideas.
The loss of enthusiasm by the development team led to shelving of the project.
The studio seeks to undertake venturesome pursuits unrelated to Dungeons & Dragons.
They embraced the decision, and this was a clear indication of unanimous agreement towards the change.
Larian Studios has no plans for a sequel, leaving the franchise's future open.
