Just two weeks after launch, Atomfall has officially crossed the 2 million player milestone, marking the fastest and most successful release in Rebellion’s 32-year history. The survival action RPG set in a dark, post-nuclear Britain has found a place in the heart set by its eerie setting, stark moral choices, and oddly charming British quirks.
As an example, in-game stats show that the community has been engaged: Players have downed over 500,000 cups of tea and accumulated more than 5.9 million kills with cricket bats. While these acts of mayhem were occurring, only 60% of the players felt it necessary to help a scientist who was injured in an early mission. When it comes to food, the wasteland favourite is tinned meat ahead of the Cornish pasty.
According to Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley, the game’s rapid success is down to its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass, which he sees as a big help in visibility and financial support. Kingsley has expressed interest in taking Atomfall further as a longer-running franchise but was quick to note that any future plans would depend on having the resources to do so.
More critically, Atomfall has received a mixed reception, gaining 62% in PC Gamer’s review. But through all of its exploration, decision making and offbeat storytelling, it has managed to get heard. Atomfall’s debut, even without a confirmed sequel, suggests Rebellion has done just that, with a shooter that feels unique, atmospheric, and oddball, like Fallout with a distinctly British flavour.
