Shields. They’re exceptionally important for your game of Valheim; in line with this thought, knowing how to make the most of your shields in Valheim is crucial. As part of this, today, we’re looking at one of the most unique shields in Valheim - the Bone Tower Shield - to help you understand how to craft a shield of this type in your own game.
Before we begin looking at the bone tower shield specifically, it’s first important that we consider how to craft a shield in general. Crafting a shield requires you to use either a workbench or a forge to craft the relevant type of design. This generally depends on whether you’re crafting a metal or wood-based shield.
The bone tower shield is a unique design in Valheim that is crafted (quite literally) from the bones of fallen foes, giving a rather macabre shield that’s an effective early-game shield. The bone tower shield is an off-hand-wielded shield that weighs 4 in total and has a durability of 200 points. It boasts a block armor score of up to a maximum of 48 and a block force of 100. Unfortunately, the shield does have a significant movement speed decrease of 20%.
As we’ve briefly mentioned, non-metal shields are generally crafted at the workbench, and the same is the case for the bone tower shield. Indeed, the bone tower shield is built at the workbench using ten pieces of wood, ten bone fragments, and three skeleton trophies.
The first-level bone tower shield can subsequently be upgraded to a second-level and third-level shield using a total of 15 wood and 15 bone fragments. Fortunately, you won’t need any additional skeleton trophies to upgrade your bone tower shield, and wood and bone fragments are both pretty easy to come across. You will need a workbench of level three, four, and five respectively to craft the three different levels of bone tower shield in Valheim.
There are three main materials required for the bone tower shield: wood, bone fragments, and skeleton trophies. These can be found as follows: Wood: Getting hold of wood is the most obvious material, which can be harvested from regular trees using any type of axe.
Skeleton trophies: Perhaps unsurprisingly, skeleton trophies are dropped by skeletons, although they aren’t necessarily common drops. Across all three different star grades of skeleton, the chance to drop a skeleton trophy is only 10%, meaning you’ll need to kill - on average - around 30 skeletons to get hold of all three skeleton trophies.
Bone fragments: Bone fragments are commonly dropped materials by skeletons, with each skeleton dropping between one and four bone fragments depending on the number of stars. Bone fragments can also be found from several other sources, such as within burial chambers, stone graves, tar pits, and sunken crypts.
While wood is easy to get hold of, skeleton trophies and bone fragments are a little trickier. Given this, looking out for skeletons from the early game is worthwhile so you can make the shield as soon as possible.
Luckily, since skeletons are found in several semi-early-game locations, such as swamps and black forests, starting your bone-collecting mission early doesn’t have to be impossible. However, going up against so many skeletons could potentially put some strain on your game’s server; so, it may be worth learning how to make Valheim server and setting up a private server before you begin your quest to create bone tower armor. This helps ensure your game remains stable with 24/7 uptime and a lag-free gaming experience, no matter the number of enemies you’ll encounter.
The bone tower shield is made from three types of materials: wood, bone fragments, and skeleton trophies.
As an early game shield, the bone tower shield is relatively strong, boasting a maximum block armor of 48 and a block force of 100. This makes it vastly better than the wood shield and wood tower shield in terms of block armor. However, it does not offer the 1.5x parry bonus of the wood shield.
No. Unfortunately, the bone tower shield does not offer a parry bonus unlike the regular wooden shield, which offers a 1.5x parry bonus.
Bone tower shields can be upgraded to a maximum level of 3. Level 3 bone tower shields have block armor of around 44 for low-level characters with a durability of 300.
If you’ve been looking to equip your character in Vaheim with the relevant gear, it’s important to know about the different options available to you - and the bone tower shield is just one such example. Given this, you may well want to keep today’s tips in mind on how to craft a bone tower shield. This may help ensure your player is well-protected in the early game, too.
