Axes. When it comes to your game, they’re expetionally versatile, not only being used as a type of weapon but also being used to chop down trees - and, though it may be surprising for new players who’ve only just started playing the game, the type of axe you use can actually have a direct effect on how well you’re able to cut wood. Given this, today, we’re looking at the best axe in Valheim for cutting wood and as a weapon to help you decide on the best wood axe or weapon axe for your needs.
In Valheim, the quality of your axe is significant for several reasons - however, this can often feel pretty easy to overlook, especially in cases where you’re still in the early game. With that being said, choosing a high-quality axe is important for a couple of key reasons, such as:
Allowing you to cut down trees more quickly. Higher-quality axes in Valheim have higher chop damage stats. This means that a higher-quality axe will be able to chop down trees more quickly - crucial in situations where you need a large amount of wood.
Allowing you to cut down new types of trees. A basic axe won’t be able to cut down just anything; in fact, there are several different species of tree that can only be chopped down using a higher-level axe. For example, a basic level axe can only cut down beech and pine trees, whereas higher level axes also begin making a mark on new tree varieties.
Giving you a stronger weapon. While many players will use their axe primarily for chopping down trees, it shouldn’t be overlooked that they’re also excellent weapons in Valheim. Given this, investing in a high-quality axe means you’ll be able to do more slash and chop damage to your enemies.
With these thoughts in mind, it’s pretty easy to see why axe quality matters so much in Valheim. However, don’t forget that factors such as chopping speed can also be influenced by your character’s skill, not the axe type alone; so, you’ll need to level up these skills to become the most efficient you can be. And, of course, you’ll want to make sure your game runs stably without lag to ensure you’re able to use your powerful new axe to the fullest; luckily, with a ScalaCube server, you can enjoy 24/7 uptime for you and your group, making playing Valheim with friends easier and more rewarding than ever. Now that we’ve considered why axes are so important during your playthrough of Valheim, it’s time for us to take a look at some of the best wood and metal axes in the game. Indeed, with a total of nine different types of axe to choose from, there’s surely something for everyone.
Axe Name | One / Two Handed | Damage | Stamina | Tree Species |
---|---|---|---|---|
Stone Axe | One Handed | 15+ Slash 20+ Chop | 5-10 | Pine or Earlier |
Flint Axe | One Handed | 20+ Slash 30+ Chop | 6-12 | Pine or Earlier |
Bronze Axe | One Handed | 40+ Slash 40+ Chop | 8-16 | Birch, Oak, and Earlier |
Iron Axe | One Handed | 60+ Slash 50+ Chop | 10-20 | Birch, Oak, and Earlier |
Battleaxe | Two Handed | 70+ Slash 40+ Chop | 8-16 | Birch, Oak, and Earlier |
Crystal Battleaxe | Two Handed | 90+ Slash 30+ Spirit 50+ Chop | 9-18 | Birch, Oak, and Earlier |
Black Metal Axe | One Handed | 100+ Slash 60+ Chop | 14-28 | Up to Yggdrasil Roots |
Jotun Bane | One Handed | 80+ Slash 40+ Poison 70+ Chop | 16-32 | Up to Yggdrasil Roots |
Berserker Axes | Dual-Wielded | 140+ Slash 80+ Chop | 16-32 | Up to Yggdrasil Roots |
As can be seen from the above table, the differences between the many variants of axe are numerous - and perhaps the strongest axe type overall is the Berserker axe, which deals a total of 220+ damage across both slash and chop damage. However, The Jotun Bane and the Crystal Battleaxe are both also excellent candidates for the best axes in certain situations due to their triple damage type; this means tat they’re easy to use against enemies that might be weak to their unique effects.
There are six one-handed axes in Valheim in total. These include the stone axe, flint axe, bronze axe, iron axe, black metal axe, and Jotun Bane.
There are seven axe types that are able to chop birch and oak trees in Valheim. These are the bronze axe, iron axe, battleaxe, crystal battleaxe, black metal axe, Jotun Bane, and the berserker axes.
Yggdrasil shoots are the hardest type of tree to chop down in Valheim. As such, there are only three axe types that can cut them to harvest Yggdrasil wood: the black metal axe, the Jotun Bane, and the berserker axes.
Despite being found in a high level area, scorched trees are easy to chop down (unsurprisingly, given their burnt husks). As a result, any axe is capable of chopping down a scorched tree in the Ashlands, even a basic stone axe (although it’ll still be quicker and easier with a higher-quality axe).
Axes are hugely useful in Valheim, allowing you to not only harvest wood from trees of many different varieties but also serving as an incredibly powerful weapon. Given this, the appeal of crafting a strong axe is very easy to understand; in short, without one, there’s only so far you’ll be able to progress, and so this is crucial to keep in mind during your adventure!
