Wondering how long the Need for Speed franchise is going to be stuck in neutral? Fans want to know when it will shift gears. Players haven't received any fresh content since the game's initial release in 2013. Now, over three years after the best need for speed game Unbound, there's no official news about when players get the next need for speed game. Let's find out why.
The culprit? EA is revving up for its next Battlefield game. Criterion Games, the studio behind the recent NFS titles, is lending its horsepower to help DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive craft an FPS to rival Call of Duty. As a result, Criterion is currently only working on seasonal updates for Unbound, with no bandwidth for a new Need for Speed game.
Despite the lack of announcements, there are hints. Criterion’s updates for Unbound, such as the Lockdown mode for Need for Speed Most Wanted fans, suggest they’re gathering feedback for future NFS innovations. Drag racing, drift modes, and fan input might shape what’s coming.
Bad news first: 2025 seems unlikely. EA’s focus on Battlefield and the impending juggernaut that is GTA VI means the industry may steer clear of major competition that year. There is a high chance we will see a new Need for Speed in 2026 or at worst 2027. Until then let's hope the wait is worth it.
The new Need for Speed 2026 is a revival of the 2000 game Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed.
NFS takes place in Palm City which is a fictional version of Mian, Florida.
The next update to Unbound celebrates Most Wanted and everything it brought to the series, as well as the addition of bikes.
