The console wars never end and as 2024 comes to an end, PlayStation 5 is the clear winner and proved its dominance over the Xbox series X|S sales decline. Let's jump into this Xbox series x|s sales comparison and find out what happened.
Since its launch in November 2020, the PS5 sales have gone up to 67.7 million units globally as compared to the Xbox series X|S which sold 31.2 million. Giving Sony’s PS5 the big lead of 36.49 million units. This gap only continues to get wider because Playstation 5 sold another 3.35 million units in the past month. Over the last 12 months, it sold an astounding 13.18 million units, completely outselling its competitor. And the market share? Playstation 5 dominates the market by holding 68.4% of the market share, leaving Xbox with only 31.6%. This marks year-over-year shifts of +2.7% and -2.7% for Microsoft. Even with its massive success, the PS5 is trailing the PS4’s launch-aligned sales by 1.91 million units, while the Xbox Series X|S lags behind the Xbox One by a more significant 4.86 million.
The PS5’s broader appeal and stronger global presence seem to have solidified its position, while Xbox has struggled with hardware stock issues and market perception. As 2024 wraps up, Sony is sitting comfortably atop the leaderboard, but, there’s always next year, right, Xbox?
A PS5 retains most of its resale value. Xbox no longer offers many exclusives because many of them will eventually be available on all platforms, but it is less expensive than a PS5.
The Playstation sold 30.53 million more copies than the Xbox X, resulting in the PS5 selling 60.16 million units and the Xbox X only selling 29.64 million.
The Xbox Series X and Series S have sold more than 12 million systems globally. In 2024, the Xbox X/S sold more than 2.4 million copies.
