Helldivers 2 is heading to the big screen, but don’t expect the game’s creators to fully suit up for Hollywood. Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt recently confirmed the studio will be "somewhat involved" in the movie’s production, but they’re leaving the heavy lifting to the film pros.
Speaking on social media, Pilestedt admitted he’d been dodging fan questions about the team’s involvement, finally conceding, “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see.” While Arrowhead wants the adaptation to stay faithful, Pilestedt made it clear they’re not “Hollywood people” and have no illusions about steering a film crew.
CEO Shams Jorjani, however, has his own hilarious vision. Writing on Discord, Jorjani joked that he’d like “as many A-list actors as possible” cast—only to have them “get killed violently immediately.” Picture that: your favorite megastar taken out by rampaging bugs or—more likely—accidental friendly fire.
Sony Productions and Sony Pictures are still keeping major details, like the director, tightly under wraps. The film joins a growing lineup of Sony game adaptations, including Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima’s upcoming anime, and The Last of Us season two, which premieres in April.
As for Helldivers 2 gameplay, it’s clear Arrowhead is taking a measured approach, ensuring the movie carries the chaotic spirit of the game without stepping too far into uncharted territory. Let’s just hope the film captures the gloriously messy joy of coordinated—or not-so-coordinated—bug-slaying.
Helldivers 2 was recently removed from Steam in over 100 countries because PlayStation required PSN sign-ins.
Helldivers 2 was released on the 8th of February, 2024 and became a huge success.
Yes, the game sold over 12 million titles and became the fastest selling playstation game to date.
