During the main quest "For Whom The Bell Tolls" in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you and Hans end up back in jail after getting into a fight at young Lord Semine's wedding. While you are set free at a point, Hans faces the gallows. You must set out in search of Captain Thomas, as he is the only person who can prove their identities but has fallen ill due to injuries.
So, you must act quickly to get Captain Thomas to vouch for them. Not only are you to find the captain, but you must also cure him of his sickness before 12 hours pass, and Han is excited. This guide covers everything you need to know about completing the For Whom The Bell Tolls quest with time to spare.
During the For Whom The Bell tolls quest, there are several optional tasks that you can participate in to build up your reputation and earn money and other items. It is unnecessary to complete these tasks, but achieving them makes it easier to finish your quest.
After your release in the morning, you will be made to haul some sacks of charcoal to the shed. Grab a sack from the nearby cart and slowly walk through the castle grounds. Head to the shed, which is located before the combat arena. Repeat this process three times to receive your next task.
For your next task, head over to blacksmith Osina, and he’ll task you with creating a horseshoe. After accepting the task, go to the smithy and collect the farmer’s horseshoes recipe, fastening material, scrap metal, steel, and armourer’s kit from the KCD2 chest. Be careful with your conversation with him, and do not joke or bring up the three-legged foal, as you will lose your reputation with him (although it does not affect the quest). Choose the farmer’s horseshoes blueprint and begin blacksmithing. Once you are done, deliver them to Kabat, located northeast of Osina.
This is an optional task. To locate a work, go outside the castle and head along the path to Kolda near the main entrance. Initial conversation with him, and he will tell you to sharpen his axe and bring it to him. Now, follow the mark on the compass to find a KCD2 chest in a shack. Open the chest to get the axe. On your way out, there will be a grindstone to your left; use the grindstone to sharpen the axe. Once it is sharpened enough, return to Kolda and give it to him.
Return to the Smithy and speak with Fanka, and she’ll mention that she’s having difficulty getting into a KCD2 chest. This chest contains a lot of her cooking ingredients, so you’ll want to help her out by selecting the following dialogue options: “Can I help you?” followed by “First, I need to get some tools”. The tools you need can be obtained by approaching Blacksmith Osina and saying “Fanka the cook sent me” and “Give me a KCD2 lockpick and I’ll help”.
A red jar will appear on a shelf in the Smithy, which contains some Charcoal and a KCD2 lockpick. Take both items, as the charcoal will also be useful later in the game. Inform Fanka that you now have the tools and follow her over to the KCD2 chest in question. Successfully lockpick the chest to complete this optional task.
To begin this task, first, you must find Father Nicodemus. He is near the training pit just past the main castle gate. Ask Father about the rosary, and he will agree to play the dice game for the rosary. He will first ask you to put in some money. If you have no money on you due to not partaking in the optional tasks, you can get the rosary by pickpocketing the father. Wait until he goes near the castle wall and then go behind him to loot the rosary. Kabat’s rosary is green, so you must be careful while pickpocketing the Father to get the correct rosary. Pickpocketing him will be difficult as he continuously switches places. Now, if you want to win the rosary in a dice game, then first, you have to get some money. You can get some money from the optional tasks or pickpocketing the Father. This is easier than going for the rosary. Pickpocketing the Father will get you 50 Groschens, enough for you to put it on the dice game for the rosary. The game is purely on luck unless you have your dice, which you will not have access to at this point. It may take a few tries to beat him in the dice game. After getting Kabat’s rosary either from pickpocketing the Father or defeating him in the Dice game, return it to Kabat.
After returning the rosary to Kabat, go to the central courtyard of the castle. You will see a couple of guards on the right side praying for the wellbeing of Thomas. Approach the guards and tell them about the rosary, and you will find out it belongs to Capitan Thomas. This will make the guard escort you to the chapel, and you will have won the trust of all the guards at the castle at that point and have full access to the chapel at any point of the quest.
Once you find yourself in the chapel, initiate a conversation with Adela and inquire about capital Thomas's health. She will inform you of his fever and the absence of a fever tonic. Quickly claim to be a physician and can help prepare a fever tonic. She will tell you you can find the physician’s journal at the Crone in his chambers.
After your encounter with Adela, head to the Crone. Go up the staircase above the bathhouse to reach the kitchen. You will find a hungry guard there; offer him a food item, and if you don't have any food item, head outside the castle gate to the guard quarters. Go to the top, and you will find a roasted chicken leg on a plate. After picking it up, leave the quarters and return to the kitchen. Share the food item with the guard, and he will move away from the staircase. Continue up the stairs and keep going up to reach the crone. Once there, enter the physician’s chambers to your left. Here, you will meet Katherine, the lady from the pond. Ask her for help and select the “thieves” option to pass the skill check. However, due to low points, you can fail the skill check. After speaking with Katherine, pick up the physician’s journal, which is in the cabinet in the left corner of the room. Read the journal from the inventory to learn how to prepare the fever tonic you need to give to Thomas.
Get hold of the fever tonic. Now, you need to brew a fever tonic, but first, you need to know the ingredients. To learn all the ingredients, open the journal and go to page 4. The first paragraph on the top right contains the list of the ingredients.
After knowing the ingredients, you need to gather them from the KCD2 chest in the room. Unlock the chest using your KCD2 lockpick. The chest contains:
Now, the only thing left to do is to brew the fever tonic. As you start, read the recipe book and switch to a fever tonic. Once fully ready, interact with the alchemy table and follow the steps below to brew a fever tonic.
Scalacube provides some of the best servers for multiplayer gaming. These servers automatically protect your data, whereas others need you to perform backups actively. In this manner, you will be sure of your progress as you collect objects. You won't notice any lag on ScalaCube gaming servers. It maximises the platform's possibilities so you can focus on reaching Captain Thomas and rescuing Ham in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
To reach Captain Thomas, you must complete tasks to gain trust or sneak in. Returning Kabat’s rosary to the guards grants access to the chapel while working optional tasks like blacksmithing and assisting Fanka, which helps earn necessary items.
The Fever Tonic requires boiled wine, three Feverfew, two Ginger, and one Elderberry leaf. The ingredients can be found in a locked KCD2 chest in the physician’s chambers.
If you don’t cure Captain Thomas and get his testimony in time, Hans will be executed at the gallows, leading to mission failure.
This quest is time-limited and must be completed before the 12th ring of the bell. Each time the bell rings, you have less time to save Hans before his execution at the gallows. You need to find a way to get to Captain Thomas at the Maiden, which you can do by working a few jobs or sneaking in. The second option is much harder to pull off since you can't pass the time to sneak at night. Engaging in optional tasks will go a long way in helping you complete the For Whom The Bell Tolls quest. You will be rewarded with money and a lockpick, which are crucial in achieving this quest smoothly.
