As a wizard in Avowed, you’ll undoubtedly want to get started with using spells and grimoires as soon as possible! However, these aren’t necessarily available right at the start of the game, meaning you’ll need to know about the best early game weapons and spells to use while building your character’s arsenal of magic. Following this thought, today, we’re looking at the best early game weapons for a wizard character in Avowed; hopefully, this will help you plan your game successfully.
First of all, we should start by considering what the best starting weapons are for a wizard in Avowed. Indeed, at the very outset of the game, your character will be very weak, and as a result, choosing a weapon that works for you is crucial.
Unfortunately, the bad news here is that, at the very start of the game, you won’t have access to any grimoires or spells. As such, your very first few battles will likely still have to be regular old melee battles. Since you’ll likely have selected the Arcane Scholar background for your new character (the one that makes the most sense for a wizard build from a story perspective), you’ll begin the game with a common dagger. As a fast, low stamina weapon, this is a pretty good choice for wizard characters just starting out until they can learn a few spells and get hold of some grimoires.
Now that we’ve considered your starting weapon as a wizard in Avowed, it’s time to look at the best early game weapons and grimoires you’ll likely want to work towards. Fortunately, the Wizard build has several options here, as not only will you be able to unlock unique spells but you can also find plenty of powerful weapons and grimoires, opening up new opportunities overall. Of course, we should stress here that, before you go any further into the game, it’s crucial to start out with a server that’s just as powerful as your wizard character will one day hopefully be! Fortunately, with a private Avowed server, you can enjoy unbeatable 24/7 uptime, full DDoS protection, and access to your server’s settings in full.
Without a doubt, the first spell you’ll want to unlock in your new Avowed game as a wizard character will be Minor Missiles. Unlocking at Level 2 of the Avowed Wizard skill tree, this will likely be the very first spell you learn in the game, making it a must for anyone playing as a wizard character to take.
Once you’ve unlocked minor missiles at Level 2 as an offensive spell, you’ll likely want to consider Arcane Veil at Level 3 as well for a defensive spell. This spell invokes a shield for 20 seconds that increases damage reduction by 50% and makes your spellcasting uninterruptable, making it a must in any early game wizard’s spell arsenal.
Readily found as loot or otherwise available to purchase from Merlyn in Paradis, a common wand is a must-have weapon for early game wizards in Avowed. While it’s not the most powerful weapon going, it’s definitely nice to be able to embrace the magic theme rather than using your starting weapon forever.
Likely the first grimoire in the game that you’ll come across is the Common Grimoire of Elements which allows you to learn four spells: Fan of Flames, Chill Blades, Jolting Touch, and Arcan Veil. This grimoire is commonly found in chests and as loot from enemies in Dawntrail, or once again, you can purchase it from Merylin in Paradis if you didn’t happen to find it during your early adventure.
A step up from the previous grimoire, this spellbook teaches a further four different spells that allow you to create areas of effect and bounce damage between multiple enemies. As such, it’s definitely one to get hold of as soon as possible! The four spells contained within the grimoire are Fireball, Blizzard, Crackling Bolt, and Bristling Frost. As with the previous grimoire, this spellbook can either be purchased from Merylin or otherwise found in Dawntrail as loot.
The Fine Grimoires of Elements and Greater Elements aren’t available as loot, and you’ll only be able to get these from Merylin in Paradis (with a rather significant 3000 price tag). These grimoires improve the ability cost, effect time, and cooldown of the spells contained within the Common Grimoire of Elements and the Common Grimoire of Greater Elements, respectively, making them useful investments if you have cash to burn (although it’s not necessary if you don’t have enough money, so don’t fret too much!)
Teaching an additional two spells versus the common grimoires, Beothel's Grimoire (again sold by Merylin in Paradis) is a great option to consider if you want to diversify away from solely using elemental magic. This Grimoire teaches Corrosive Siphon and Parasitic Staff, spells that can both help recover your own health and essence, respectively, along with Arcane Veil and Blizzar.
You can find early game spells for a wizard character in Avowed within Grimoires. These can be found as loot in the world - several can appear on Dawntrail - or purchased from vendors such as Merylin in Paradis.
If you’ve been looking to attempt a playthrough of Avowed as a wizard, it’s crucial to know about the different types of weapons in the game; after all, while you’ll be starting out with a generic weapon type, you’ll undoubtedly want to begin diversifying into spells and grimoires as soon as possible. Given this thought, we strongly recommend keeping today’s recommended weapons and spells in mind to help with your own early game battles; hopefully, this will make it a little easier to find your perfect weapons and spells.
