Base building - it’s one of the core components of the Valheim game, and the stronger and more comfortable your base is, the stronger your character is likely to be. However, there will inevitably come times when your base comes under threat, not least of all from raids. In line with this thought, the importance of preparing your base from attack by characters with malicious intend becomes paramount - and luckily, there are several simple ways that you can help ensure your base has the best possible defence. In line with this thought, today, we’re looking at some of the key things you should know about Valheim base defence to help protect your own base from attacks, too.
Defending your base. It might sometimes feel like a tedious chore, but the reality is that base defence is incredibly important for your Valheim game. Indeed, a well-protected base offers an important safe haven and refuge, both in the early game and as you progress. GIven this, it’s paramount to protect your base, especially if you’re concerned about attacks by hostile creatures. Fortunately, there are several ways to go about this.
Of course, it’s important to note here that your safety in Valheim isn’t limited exclusively by the strength of your base, and there are actually many factors that can play a role in this. For example, the stability of your server can represent a significant but often overlooked risk to your game, potentially putting you at risk of severe lag - and that can be enough for an enemy to pull off a well planned blow against your character. Fortunately, when you set your game up insteadon a private server, you can enjoy far better results. So, why not create Valheim server for you and your friends with ScalaCube today and enjoy a lag-free gaming experience with 24/7 uptime, many player slots, excellent stability, full server settings access, and so much more.
Naturally, the best defence is to not be caught by surprise, in many cases! Fortunately, prior to a large scale attack on your base, you’ll see a short warning note that lets you know it’s time to defend your base. These include the following.
Warning Note | Attacking Species |
---|---|
The Earth is Shaking | Trolls |
The Forest is Moving | Brutes, Greydwarves, and Greydwarf Shamans |
Skeleton Surprise | Skeletons |
There’s a Smell of Sulphur in the Air | Surtings |
The Horde is Attacking | Fulings, Fuling Beserkers, and Fuling Shamans |
You are Being Hunted | Wolves |
Eikthyr Rallies the Creatures of the Forest | Meadow-biome creatures |
A Cold Wind Blows From the Mountains | Drakes |
A Foul Smell From the Swamp | Draugr and Skeletons |
By now, we’ve considered some of the main reasons that defence is so important - but that doesn’t actually help keep your game stable. To this end, it’s time to dive into some of the best base defence methods in the game to help.
If you’re just starting out in Valheim and need a quick and easy way to protect your base from damage, solid walls and sharp wooden stakes are likely to be the best options to consider here. Indeed, not only will solid wooden walls keep out most early-game enemies you’re likely to encounter, but adding a perimeter of sharp stakes also makes it even harder for enemies to get through. Any enemies that end up getting caught by the stakes can also be looted, so this is an excellent early-game way to simultaneously protect your base and increase your looting opportunities.
In many cases, your early game defences won’t stay effective for all that long - and the early to mid game is likely when you’ll need to start getting a little more creative. One such option here that can often be incredibly helpful is to dig a moat around your base; this helps prevent enemies from being able to access your base as most Valheim enemies cannot navigate steep terrains well, serving as an excellent defensive strategy. Of course, you’ll likely need a bridge to cross the moat yourself; however, this allows you to focus your defensive capabilities on this one area.
While there are several ways to defend your base against ground enemies, flying foes represent a much greater challenge. Defensively, the best approach to such creatures is simply to invest in a bow and arrow so you can take them down while they’re still airborne. In addition to this, ensuring your walls are as strong as possible is important to keep your base safe from aerial bombardments.
One of the best “automated” defences for your base in Valheim is to add a pack of tamed wolves to your home. Of course, this does represent a pretty significant challenge since wolves in Valheim represent formidable foes. With that being said, if you are able to tame wolves with some raw meat, they’ll defend your base viciously from attacks by malicious creatures.
As a final tactic, you could always consider taking to the skies and elevating your base to reduce the chances of mobs successfully damaging your structure. Of course, this approach does require you to use the very best materials at your disposal near to the base of the structure to prevent damage, as any damage could compromise the stability of your entire base. Still, it’s also one of the most defendable base designs if you have ranged weapons, and this also comes with the benefit of looking pretty impressive, too.
Creating a flying base in Valheim is a little tricky and requires a great deal of precision and planning. This method relies on elevating the ground into the sky with a rock placed atop the ground. Then, dig a moat around the elevated ground and return the elevated soil to its normal terrain height; this leaves the rock (and any bases upon it) floating in the sky. This method is largely based on a glitch and so may be patched at some point in the future.
When the game spawns a raid on your base in Valheim, you’ll receive a small warning text that relates to the type of attack incoming. These are generally quite ominous, so they’re easy to recognize compared to most in-game notes.
Inevitably, protecting your base in Valheim is incredibly important. Following this thought, considering today’s five simple base protection and defence strategies might just help keep your bases strong and secure, no matter what challenges the game might throw your way.
