If you’re working on completing the Field Office Island Survey in Stardew Valley, there’s quite a bit to think about and it can definitely get a little overwhelming. So, let’s break it all down. Today, we’re diving into everything you need to know about completing the Ginger Island Field Office and Museum. With this info, finishing up this part of the game should feel a whole lot easier.
But first, if you want more control over your gaming experience? Choosing the right Stardew Valley Server hosting can make a huge difference in speed, mod support, and stability.
First things first: let’s talk about where the Field Office actually is. You’ll find the Ginger Island Field Office on the north side of Ginger Island. It’s located just east of the Island Dig Site and a bit south of the Ginger Island Volcano. The place itself looks like a dark gray tent, complete with a rolling fabric door, a lantern hanging outside, and a brown sign with a bone on it sitting to the right of the entrance.
Inside the Field Office, you’ll meet Professor Snail. He’s always hanging around there, no matter the time of day. But to get him into the Office in the first place, you’ll need to rescue him from the nearby Mushroom Cave. Once you do that, he’ll take up residence. That cave, by the way, later becomes home to Fizz, the JojaMart rep who sells those Perfection Waivers.
Right after you rescue Professor Snail, he’ll introduce you to the Island Survey. This survey is basically all about documenting the flora and fauna of Ginger Island. Fun fact: it was during this research that Professor Snail ended up getting himself trapped.
Once he’s settled back in his tent, you’ll be able to start the Island Survey. Your goal is to figure out how many purple flowers and purple starfish are scattered across Ginger Island. Sounds easy, but it’s a bit of a scavenger hunt. For players deep into the game, though, it’s a great way to keep exploring the island in a new way.
There’s one catch though. You can only attempt the Island Survey once per in-game day. If you answer incorrectly, you’ll have to wait until the next day to try again. Plus, you’re limited to answering just one question each day, so even if you nail both answers on your first try, it’ll still take two days to wrap it all up.
You’ll need to answer two questions for the Island Survey:
Each question has a fixed answer, which means the numbers don’t change from game to game. That’s great news if you’d rather skip the legwork and just plug in the answers.
Here are the answers:
Since these answers are consistent, you can totally look them up if you’d rather not wander around counting everything yourself.
No, it doesn’t. Donating fossils doesn’t count toward the Island Survey itself, though it’s still a big part of completing the Field Office collections.
When you complete the Island Survey, you’ll unlock a set of unique rewards. Each collection comes with its own prize, and there are six different collections in total, meaning multiple rewards are up for grabs.
Here’s what you get from each collection:
Collection | Regular Reward | Alternative Reward |
---|---|---|
Mummified Frog | One golden walnut | Cookout kit |
Mummified Bat | One golden walnut | Tent kit |
Snake Collection | Three golden walnuts and one mango sampling | Mango sampling |
Large Animal Collection | Six golden walnuts and one banana sampling | Banana sapling |
In addition to those, once you’ve completed all four fossil/mummy collections and answered both Island Survey questions, you’ll unlock the Ostrich Egg Incubator recipe. This allows you to hatch ostrich eggs on your farm. To craft it, you’ll need 50 hardwood, 50 bone fragments, and 20 cinder shards.

If the Field Office is empty, it probably means you haven’t rescued Professor Snail yet. You’ll find him stuck behind a boulder in the Mushroom Cave (also called the Watery Cave). You’ll need to blow up the boulder before he’s free to return to the Office.
If you’ve been aiming to complete the Stardew Valley Field Office Island Survey, knowing exactly what you need to gather makes all the difference. Once you’ve collected all the necessary components for the survey, you’ll see the Ginger Island Field Office start to feel much more complete and well-stocked.
