Obsidian Entertainment has disclosed the reason for ditching open-world structures for a zone-based approach in their hit game Avowed.
Avowed's narrative designer Kate Dollarhyde talked about the new direction the developer took in the project. She added that the game decision was taken because of the pacing mechanism that's not suited for open-world games. Dollarhyder explained players can't keep track of where they are and what they're doing at any given time.
She teased that the upcoming avowed game will be featuring large, explorable zones that unfold in sequence, similar to The Outer Worlds. This way, the developers always know the gameplay experience, making it easier for them to create design meaningful content.
This decision of Obisidian skipping avowed rpg feature may come as a surprise for RPG fans, especially in an age where open-world games are dominating the scene. By focusing on zones, Obsidian is aiming to deliver an immersive gaming experience. Players can still visit the areas again to complete the side quests that are not complete.
Avowed is an action RPG game that will launch on February 18, 2025. The game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. Players roam the land filled with chaos and make decisions that not only affect them but shape up the destiny of everyone in this war-torn universe.
The anticipated game by Obsidian Entertain will be available exclusively for Windows and Xbox Series X/S players.
Obsidian Entertainment opted for a zone-based design to improve pacing and ensure a more cohesive narrative experience.
Players can return to zones to complete side quests they missed earlier.
Nope, romance isn't part of the game, as Obsidian is focusing on other aspects of the RPG experience.
