The game director of The Last of Us Part 2, Matthew Gallant, is on board with PC mods, even ones as crazy as putting Shrek in Ellie’s place. Gallant admits that although developers intend to give a certain narrative experience, they are aware that players will always personalise games to make them feel comfortable and enjoy the game well.
Mods are seen as a player outlet to play the game in a different way, and he believes using these mods can help define what players enjoy and possibly give him ideas of what to do with the stuff down the road. As Gallant puts it, the team is willing to let players adjust certain aspects of the gameplay to make it better, even if it moves away from their vision of the game.
He cares about how several players interact with the game and that even unexpected interactions are a demonstration of the game’s reach. Hopefully, the PC release of The Last of Us 2 will be treated to a flood of creative mods. Gallant is excited to see how the community will express themselves through these customisations.
The game director has stated that he is supportive of the player-created mods.
Indeed, the PC release provides an avenue for modding.
They are open to all forms of player expression. No.
Player modifications can indeed give developers further insights.
