Yet another jaw dropping milestone is in the books for Star Citizen as the project has managed to push its crowdfunding total over the $800 million mark. An enormous community has fuelled the ambition of the game and its development.
The sum has been gathered by a combination of direct donation and purchasing access to the game's playable Alpha. Even after years of development, enthusiasm hasn't cooled off. Nevertheless, players continue to pump money into new ships, gear, and updates in the hope that Cloud Imperium Games can bring their ultimate space sim to fruition.
As the project is still being developed, the developers also announced that CitizenCon this year will be turning digital yet again. Most importantly, traditional events are often highlights for fans, but the team added the digital format will make participation less ad hoc, smoother to organize and more accessible. For now, details are expected soon about CitizenCon 2025, and fans can hope for game reveals, new demos, and previews of things to come.
Despite criticisms about the timeline of the game being too long and not being completed enough yet, Star Citizen’s roll ahead shows no signs of stopping. It’s not just that players want in, they want to buy in on the idea of a living, breathing universe that’s more than what can fit on one disc. Should the end be near or way off, however, the community’s passion for the project still fuels its production at a scale almost unheard of in gaming.
