Warner Bros. Games has abandoned the expansion, Hogwarts Legacy Definitive edition, and its upcoming content. Bloomberg sources confirmed the cancellation because developers lacked enough new material to support their proposed pricing.
The magical adventure set in Britain's magical school has achieved more than 34 million sales since its launch in spring 2023, thus becoming one of the top-selling games of 2023. The successful launch of the game did not lead to any major updates in newly developed content. The developers planned new storylines for the expansion, which Warner Bros. ultimately cancelled while deciding to launch the Definitive Edition instead.
The game director of Avalanche Software, Alan Tew, announced in February 2023 that the studio would prioritize delivering the core game with no DLC content in future.
Warner Bros. Games faced multiple problems as they shut down Monolith Productions while also terminating project development. The company has decided to invest its resources primarily in major franchises that include Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, and Batman.
While the Hogwarts Legacy DLC was discontinued, reports suggest that developers are currently working on a follow-up installment to the game. A large number of gamers express optimism about upcoming Wizarding World-related games in the future.
The DLC expansion project did not receive any official declaration from the developers prior to its cancellation announcement.
Public response raised doubts as the planned extra content did not meet the cost expectations.
Reports reveal that development for a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is active at present.
Since spring 2023, the game has achieved sales of 34 million copies.
