Path of Exile 2 introduces new Ascendancy classes that provide players with unique abilities and playstyles. Each character selects one of their six base classes between Warrior, Monk, Mercenary, Sorceress, Witch, and Ranger, from which they can advance on two unique Ascendancy paths for combat specialization.
As a Commander, the Warrior gains command abilities for boosting allies, while as a Warbringer, he emphasizes Warcries and totems to increase his strength. The Witch gains two routes, such as the Occultist, who controls destructive dark energy and curses, and the other tops in the Infernalist, who summons demons and burns enemies with fire. Rangers can make two specialized Ascendancy choices between controlling powerful animal companions as Beastmasters or mastering lethal traps and evasive Survivalist tactics.
The Sorceress utilizes two different paths of progression: Either the Elementalist handles fire, ice, and lightning magic, or the Arcanist uses pure arcane energy for fatal spellcasting. Through progression, the Monk can reach either the Ascendant martial discipline or become the Grandmaster fighter who specializes in precision and discipline. The Mercenary specializes in two unique build paths, both a Blademaster who attacks with fatal precision and a Duellist who fights one-on-one through agility-based tactics.
When players finish Act 2 of the Trial of the Sekhemas, they gain access to Ascendancy unlocks through the challenging sequence, which ends in a final boss encounter. After accomplishing the Trial of the Sekhemas, players will gain access to two more skill trees, which allow them to enhance their favorite characters further.
