According to Gearbox Software, Borderlands 4 will become available on September 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Sony announced this news during their February 12 State of Play event for 2025.
The next instalment in the Borderlands franchise starts by showing players a new planet called Kairos, where they select their part from four available Vault Hunter roles. The game puts you in charge of defending against the Order led by Timekeeper while hunting for alien artifacts.
The next Borderlands game follows the series formula in its looting and shooting gameplay with action role-playing features. Kairos receives a seamless world structure from Gearbox because the developers removed all loading screens for exploration. The developers added a grappling hook mechanism to Borderlands 4, giving players more movement and fight options.
Development for the game started before the release of Borderlands 3 took place in 2019. Take-Two Interactive acquired Gearbox in March 2024, followed by the official game announcement in August 2024 and the debut gameplay at The Game Awards later in the year. The upcoming Borderlands 4 State of Play event in spring 2025 will present dedicated information about the game and detailed gameplay explanations to fans.
