Character creation anxiety is real, and Avowed players are feeling it hard. Unlike many modern RPGs, Obsidian Entertainment’s latest title locks you into your chosen look from the start—no barbers, no magic makeovers, no spontaneous beard growth. While the game does warn you before you commit, some players, like Reddit user ArtificialInelegance, have still found themselves in full regret mode, even restarting the game after 25 hours just to tweak their character.
This has sparked a conversation on whether Avowed should allow mid-game appearance changes. One Redditor, Felix_Likes_Tofu, perfectly summed up why: character evolution. They pointed out how changing hairstyles or facial features could reflect a character’s journey. A mystical mage should be able to grow a beard, a battle-hardened warrior could go for a rougher look, and a rogue emerging from a spider-infested cave should have the option to shave off everything—trauma and all.
At present, Avowed offers no way to alter your character’s appearance beyond clothing. Given how the lighting in the character creator doesn’t always translate well to in-game environments, many players are hoping Obsidian will introduce a solution in future patches. The good news? Obsidian is actively updating Avowed, and while this feature wasn’t a pre-launch priority, a post-launch fix isn’t out of the question. For now, players have two choices: roll with their look or start over. Here’s hoping Obsidian lets us visit an in-game barber before we hit another 25-hour restart.
Obsidian didn’t include a mid-game appearance change, and once you exit the character creator, you're stuck with your look.
There’s no confirmation yet, but since Obsidian is actively patching Avowed, a future update could make it possible.
Nope! The only customization options after character creation are clothing changes—no haircuts, beards, or magical face makeovers (yet).
