If you’ve played Monster Hunter Wilds before, you know the drill—your weapon starts out slicing and dicing like a dream, but after a few minutes of hacking away at a monster, it suddenly feels like you’re hitting it with a spoon. That’s because Monster Hunter Wilds sticks to a classic series mechanic: weapon sharpness. As your weapon dulls, it deals less damage and might even bounce off tougher monster parts. But don’t worry—sharpening your weapon is easier than ever in Wilds, and this guide will show you how to do it fast, safely, and without getting smacked in the face while you’re mid-sharpen.

Every hit you land slowly wears down your weapon’s sharpness, and once it gets too dull, your attacks won’t be nearly as effective. You’ll know it’s time to sharpen when you see the sharpness bar (below your health and stamina) start to change color. Green sharpness means that you’re good to go! Your weapon is doing full damage. Yellow sharpness means you’re starting to lose effectiveness. Some attacks might bounce off. While a red sharpness – Stop everything and sharpen. At this point, your weapon is no better than a blunt stick, which means you aren’t really making the most of your hits. When your weapon is in yellow or red, you should sharpen ASAP to keep your damage up.
Luckily, sharpening weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds is pretty straightforward, thanks to your Whetstone. Your Whetstone is an infinite-use item that you can use anytime and anywhere. Here’s how to sharpen your weapon:
Hold L1 (PlayStation) / LB (Xbox) to open the Radial Menu. Then tilt the right stick up to select the Whetstone. After which you release the stick and let your hunter do their thing. It takes four sharpening cycles (about four seconds) to fully restore the sharpness of your weapon. But four seconds is a long time. It’s not ideal to still for that long in the middle of a battle. That’s where your Seikret comes in.

One of the best new features in Monster Hunter Wilds is sharpening while you’re mounting your Seikret. Instead of awkwardly rolling around trying to find a safe spot, you can hop on your Seikret and sharpen while you’re on the move.
To sharpen on your Seikret, Press Up on the D-Pad to call your Seikret. Then mount up and put some distance between you and the monster. Open the Radial Menu (L1/LB) and select the Whetstone. Your hunter will sharpen your weapon while riding your Seikret. This will keep you mobile and safe.
This is a massive game-changer. You’re no longer running the risk of getting caught off guard by a monster because you're stuck in one position trying to sharpen your weapon. If the monster starts running away, you can even sharpen while pursuing it, so you're always ready for whatever happens next in the fight.
Four seconds doesn't seem like a whole lot of time in real life. However, in the heat of battle, it can mean everything between victory and defeat. On the bright side, there are a couple of ways to accelerate the sharpening process:
Speed Sharpening (Armor Skill) Some armor sets have the Speed Sharpening skill, which removes one cycle from the sharpening animation. That means you’ll sharpen faster, reducing the time you’re left vulnerable.
Felyne Polisher (Food Buff Before heading out on a hunt, check the canteen. Eating food with two Courage-tagged ingredients gives you the Felyne Polisher buff, which also removes one sharpening cycle.
Whetfish Fin (Faster Sharpening Item)

Do you want an even quicker way? Try Whetfish Fin. It is a single-use sharpening item that cuts the sharpening time in half (only 2 cycles instead of 4). You can find these by catching Whetfish at fishing spots. Stacking Speed Sharpening and Felyne Polisher can seriously cut down sharpening time, so if you hate standing still for too long, these are worth considering.

There are some fishing spots in the game where you can find Whetfish to get Whetfish Fin. With Whetfish Fin. It’s a really good backup to have when you don’t have the time to fully sharpen your weapon.
Sharpening your weapon is just as important as dodging attacks or landing combos in Monster Hunter Wilds. A dull weapon means less damage and less damage means longer fights—which no one wants. With the new mounted sharpening mechanic, keeping your weapon at full sharpness is easier than ever. Regardless of the weapon, keeping it sharp will make every hunt smoother.
