There are two ways to take down a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds: killing it or capturing it. Killing a monster is simpler, but capturing it also has advantages. Not only does it speed up the conclusion of the hunt, but you can also reap valuable resources you'd normally skin from a dead monster. But capturing a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds is not that simple as weakening it. You'll have to gear up, listen to the signs that it's ready to be caught, and use the right tools at the right moment. If you aspire to be a master monster catcher, this guide breaks down everything you need to know—everything from trap-making to landing a flawless capture.
Capturing monsters is worth it because it saves times, gives a better loot and it makes farming easier. But not all monsters can be captured. Elder Dragons and certain special creatures must be slain instead. Always check your field guide to see if a monster can be captured before attempting to do so.

Capturing a monster involves three main steps:
Gather the Items Needed Before you go on a hunt, make sure you have both a Trap and Tranq items in your Item Pouch. For traps, you’ll need either a Shock Trap or a Pitfall Trap. For Tranq Items, you’ll need Tranq Bombs, Tranq Knives, or Tranq Ammo Without these items, capturing a monster won’t be possible. Make sure you’ve crafted them before you head into battle.
Weaken the Monster Once you’ve located your target, fight it as usual while keeping an eye on its behavior. When a monster is weak enough to be captured, it will start limping away or show a white skull icon next to its name on the minimap. These warnings mean that the monster’s life force is close to depletion and is ready for capture. DO NOT kill it at this stage—this is where you set up your trap instead.
Trap and Tranquilize the Monster Once the monster is weakened, sheath your blade and open your Radial Menu or to select a Trap. Place the Trap in the path of the monster or at its feet when it is idle or sleeping. Then allow the monster step on it—it will be paralyzed for roughly 10 seconds. Once that’s done, quickly use your Tranq Items before the trap expires. Once it’s tranquilized, the capture is complete! There will be a brief cut scene, and the hunt will conclude instantly. Trapped monsters will give you monster materials, Guild Points, and Palico XP—just as if you killed them.
There are two traps, and choosing the right one can make or break your capture quest.
Shock Trap
Pitfall Trap
It’s best to set your traps in tight areas where the monster has nowhere to run. Another option is to drop the trap in front of a monster that’s charging towards you for a fast capture. You can also place a trap directly underneath a monster that limps back to its nest to sleep to immobilize it quickly.

Once a monster is caught, you've got several seconds to knock it out before it gets away. The three Tranq item options in Monster Hunter Wilds are:
Tranq Bombs
Tranq Ammo
Tranq Knives

Tranq Bombs are best because they don't need to be aimed accurately. When using Tranq Ammo or Knives, try to stand properly to avoid missing. And finally, move very quickly. If the effect of the trap runs off before you can get two Tranq hits, the beast will flee.

No, some monsters—such as Elder Dragons—cannot be caught. Always check your Field Guide before you try a catch.
If the trap times out while you have yet to register two Tranq hits, the monster will get away. You’d need to set another trap in order to try again.
Not necessarily—there are certain items only available by carving, while some have higher drop rates from captured monsters. Go through the rewards list to see what will be best for your hunt.
Capturing monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds adds another level of strategy to your hunt. It's not simply about raw power—it's about planning, patience, and precision. Knowing how to time your captures and how to use the right tools at the right moment can help you complete battles quicker and save you from extended fights, making you a better hunter.
