Finding the Golden Threads: In Search of Wild Saffron
Saffron is a rarity in the desolate lands of Enshrouded. Saffron is an amber-hued spice derived from the flower known as Crocus sativus. Unlike most resources, saffron doesn't reside in great abundance all across the landscape. This is where you can find the valuable spice:
Wild Saffron, You can find this plant in just about any source in the Kindlewaste, but the most reliable place to get a significant amount of wild saffron is in this – a gigantic, sprawling desert that seems to reach far to the east of the Cinder Vault. Just be warned, though; this entire area is shrouded in a deadly poisonous mist known as the Shroud, and it will quickly sap your health if you aren't prepared with a proper Flame equipped to survive the zone.
Open Desert Fields: Look for saffron amidst the arid plains and bare vegetation within the Kindlewaste. The small, purple-red flowers can be easy to miss, so keep a keen lookout as you explore.
Alternate Routes: If the prospect of setting off into the punishing Kindlewaste sounds daunting, particularly early in the game, then there is a less reliable but safer option. Seek out hidden pockets of saffron growing near the Spire Tower northeast of the Cinder Vault, but even this yields far less saffron.
Planting Saffron in Your Backyard: Growing Your Own Bounty
While wild saffron can be collected, a much better and more sustainable option is to grow it within your base. Here's how to cultivate saffron:
Unlock the Seedbed: You'll also need access to a Seedbed before you can plant the Saffron. This is unlocked by befriending the Farmer — one of the game's NPCs — when you complete her initial quest, which then lets her offer the blueprint for crafting the Seedbed.
Harvesting of saffron spice is not the only use for wild saffron plants; you can also get Saffron Seedlings from them. You can interact with a mature saffron plant just to get a chance to get the seedlings to plant in the future.
Planting and Care: Now that you have Saffron Seedlings, take your Seedbed outside of your Base and interact with it. Choose "Saffron" option from the crafting menu. Planting Saffron will require 1x Water, 1x Saffron Seedling, and 1x Fertilized Farm Soil. Remember, Saffron prospers in warm environments, so be careful where you place your base.
Harvesting Your Saffron After a little development time your saffron plants will mature. Click on them to harvest that wonderful spice, and it will automatically go into your inventory.
Saffron: The Appeal Goes Much Beyond Just Spice
Though saffron may seem a mere kitchen adjunct, in Enshrouded, it proves useful beyond just flavouring your dishes. Here are some of the key uses of saffron:
Elixirs and Potions: This gives the making of certain elixirs and potions, and the effects may vary from temporary boosts of health and resistance.
Dyes: this potent spice can be used to dye, and give colour to, your clothes and any other crafted items, making them as colorful and individualistic as possible.
Barter Value: Saffron has value more than just a personal use. One can trade with other players or merchants for any of the high-demand resources within the world of Enshrouded.
It's not that easily found on the markets of Enshrouded, either by shops or traders. You'd have to look for it in the wild or grow it yourself.
The most reliable source of wild saffron is the Kindlewaste desert, but travelling it requires one to first be properly protected from the Shroud.
Saffron does not state explicitly how long it takes to grow in the game, but it is rather fast compared to most other crops in the Enshrouded.
Yes, saffron is a viable investment, giving sustainability to spice that is very valuable in terms of crafting and possibly in trading.
