If you are trying to figure out how to unlock a skill slot in Dune, the process is directly tied to story progression. To unlock your third ability slot, you must complete the Fourth Trial of Aql. For now, this is the only way to gain an additional Dune Awakening skill slot.

How to Unlock the Third Skill Slot
The third Dune Awakening skill slot is unlocked upon completion of the Fourth Trial of Aql. Doing this will require the player to clear the previous trials of Aql. After doing so, head to The Hollow Hammer, located in the East Vermillius Gap, to find the final challenge. By completing this questline, you automatically get an additional skill slot that gives you more freedom in terms of your build and combat.
