What do you do when one of the central mechanics of your game is taken away? Minecraft is a game where you mine for resources and experience. So what do you do when you don’t start on the ground, but in the sky? Well, Janky Skyblock tries to figure that out, and the results are definitely worth looking at.
What we’ve got here is a system built on being in the air. You start in the clouds, on an island. No, this isn’t Sonic and Knuckles. Because everything is built in the sky, the mechanics and the gameplay is a lot different. Obviously, if you stray too far off the island, you’ve got a long way down to your eventual death. However, you have to make the most of the resources that you’ve got to be able to access new areas and gain more tools and materials to build with.
Being so high up in the air does bring you the chance for a little contemplation. You’ve made it this far, and created this incredible landscape in the sky, and it sort of makes you re-evaluate how you use resources on the ground. The problem with normal Minecraft is resource management isn’t as difficult. If you want more wood, you just go and find another tree. If you want more stone, you just dig down underneath the ground. There is no consequences, there is no cause-and-effect if you waste common resources. But up here in the sky, where it’s more difficult to access things, everything counts.
From a functional perspective, this is a very well done mod. It performs well, it’s smooth, everything works as it should. You can go to the Nether, or the End, and they both perform exactly as they normally do, you just start incredibly high up. This really does change up the gameplay experience, so it’s nice to see how everything works.
You really do play this for the new perspective that comes from being so high up in the air. Everything is different, and you can’t escape that. The world is unique in the way it looks and behaves because you don’t have access to the same resources as normal. You have to think about what you do, because replenishing your stock of wood or stone is not the easiest thing to do, which really does add some responsibility into the game.
Thanks to all of the hard work of the developers, and also some unique gameplay mechanics which come into affect value up in the air that we won’t spoil, this is a highly engaging and interesting experience. Walking in the sky is not something that Minecraft is particularly well known for, but it can be an incredibly rewarding experience. The best thing you could do is take the time to experiment with everything that’s on offer here, and figure out exactly what it is that you want to do. You won’t regret it. Not for a moment.
