Ah, the world of the post apocalypse. It’s always a fascinating topic for people to sink their teeth into simply because the kind of experience that you get is wholly unique depending on the imagination of the creator. War, famine, disease, alien invasion - they’ve all shaped the world of tomorrow when it’s been ravaged by whatever plot the author sees fit, and this is much the same here in FallCraft.
You’ve got a unique and incredible environment to work with here, which has been carefully designed to create a feeling of hopelessness. The system carefully creates an idyllic backstory which is abruptly ripped apart by the introduction of the latest plot mechanics and shows you that nothing is permanent. Now, you have to survive in a world which is highly unique and easily very challenging, with nothing but your wits.
FallCraft blends elements of the typical survival formula and mixes them up to create something new. It’s clear that there was a very specific vision for the future at work here, and it is showcased in the way that all of the characters and environments work together to come up with something new and exciting. This has all been clearly well done and that helps to create a sense of excitement and anticipation in every part of the map. You don’t know what is coming and that helps to amp up the tension and the fear.
Technically this has been well designed. There’s a lot of mods at work here and they’ve all been polished and created in such a way that using them isn’t difficult. You can easily find your way around, and that’s fine. But the real fear and challenge comes from the lack of a cohesive plot. There are quests if you want them, but for the most part this is all about survival and making sure that you stay alive. The system runs on 1.7.10 version of Minecraft, and you’ll need a fairly powerful PC to play, but it is well worth it when you’ve got it all figured out.
One thing that is heavily encouraged is the use of exploration and resource management. You don’t have a defined set of tools and you need to hunt for what you want to use, so it is important to make sure that you have successfully implemented the mechanics that you want to get the type of experience that you deserve.
Overall, this is a well-polished and pretty exciting mod. It doesn’t promise anything and makes you work for everything that you acquire, but that is, to be honest, a big part of the excitement. You want to keep going and you want to try hard because it’s not easy to make everything perform in the way it should. What you have to consider is that this is meant to be difficult. So everything that you do and the way you interact with the environment will have such a bearing on how the game plays. Give it a go and see what happens!
