Desolate Wasteland is one of those “surviving on a hostile world” kind of mod packs. The principle goes a little something like this; you are part of a team which has been sent to try and find resources to rejuvenate a broken, damaged earth at the end of its lifespan, or failing that, find a new planet to colonise. However, following contact with the inhabitants of a new planet, you find that you have been left behind by your team for reasons unknown and now have to survive.

Understandably, this is where things start to get pretty interesting. You’re now stuck on a planet that you don’t know much about, surrounded by aliens and unknown environments. It is up to you to survive, and this makes it very interesting for people to try and figure out the best way to do just that.

What makes this pack so effective is the atmosphere it helps to create. Everything around you is so alien and unlike everything you know, so you start to gradually get more and more unsettled by the environments you come across and the types of creatures you interact with. There’s a really rich and unique vibe at work here and it’s fascinating to see. You want the game to move forward, but at the same time you’re scared of what you might encounter.

From a purely technical perspective, this pack runs on 1.7.10 at the time of writing. This is obviously not the most advanced version of the game anymore, but it does create a need for a smooth and fluid gameplay experience. It is heavily recommended that you invest in 7 GB RAM to make sure that you can play properly, but a little bit more than this is suggested for most computer systems.

These technical specifications may seem considerable, but they are worth it if you want to get the most from your experiences. There are many different reasons why something like this would be a very entertaining modification pack for you to play. Being able to explore rich environments and different things is always enjoyable, but never more so than one here on an unknown planet with new resources and ways to play.

The gauntlet has been pretty much thrown here. There is a challenge issued to you as the player to try and survive in a hostile and unknown world. You have to try and figure out what it is that you want to do with yourself, and then come up with the best possible game mechanics to make that work. This is your experience, your fight, and your entertainment. What you do will be up to you but there are a lot of options to work with here. Are the way that you do things and the type of experience that you have or determine exactly how much you enjoy this, but it is up to you to put the time and effort in to make sure that you get the best gameplay.
