How to Unlock Rex in Risk of Rain 2
Rex is a high-risk, high-reward type of survivor, so it is easy to see why players may want to unlock this character. However, for newbies, this process may take a while because you have to play to the fourth stage of the game and complete a major challenge.
Fortunately, you came across this guide, which means you are trying to unlock the character. Continue reading, as we've covered the easiest way to go about it without getting killed. Additionally, we highlighted some of its best attributes to get you up to speed after unlocking Rex in Risk of Rain 2.
How to Unlock Rex
Rex was added to the game in the Scorched Acres update that was released on June 25th, and like most survivors, to unlock him, you must complete a challenge. The challenge is the Power Plant event, and based on the game’s description, you will need to repair a broken robot with an escape pods fuel array.
Here are the simple steps to completing this challenge and unlocking this character:
- Interact with your pod
- Collect the fuel array
- Go to Abyssal Depths to rescue the survivor
- Complete the challenge and unlock Rex as a playable character.
We will touch more on these processes to make it easy for you.
Acquiring the Fuel Array
Once you arrive at stage one with your pod, you will need to collect the fuel array from your pod. Collecting this free equipment is easy because it is located at the back of your pod and you have to make a 180 degree turn to get it.
It is important for you to note that this equipment only appears at the beginning of the game, so characters like False Son or Acrid may not be able to complete this challenge. This is because they don't start at the first stage of the game unless they feature in a multiplayer option where they are not the main character.
Once you've claimed the fuel array, it goes into your equipment slot, and the game describes it as extremely unstable. What this means is that anytime you drop below fifty percent health, even if you try to exchange life for money, the fuel array will explode, and you will die. We recommend using items that prevent you from getting burst damage while carrying the fuel array.
Getting these items will be easy if you have the Command Artifact. Some of these items include;
- Tougher Times
- Safer Spaces
- Topaz Brooch
- Hopoo Feathers (fall damage)
With these items, proceed to stage 4, which is the Abyssal depths, to find Rex.
Going to the Abyssal Depths
When you're going to the Abyssal depths, you have to be extremely careful when fighting bosses and enemies. To be on the safe side when you encounter a tough event, put the Fuel Array aside, then pick it up once the fight is over. When going through any portal, you will need to carry the equipment with you; otherwise, you will forfeit the challenge and start the entire process again.
Also, the Fuel Array takes up space in your equipment slot, so you may be limited in your abilities. But this should not impair you, especially if you carry all the necessary tools for the challenge.
Finding and Repairing Rex
Once you get to stage four which is the Abyssal depth, locating the character can pose a challenge especially because Rex is part of the environment. To find Rex you have to go to the upper rock platforms in the middle of the map. You can climb the platform with the large chains that are scattered across the area. Alternatively you can use the jump pad located at an open area in the environment.
Once you reach the second highest platform, jump to the other side and use your Fuel Array to unlock Rex. After unlocking, you've completed the challenge, and subsequently, Rex will be available as one of your playable characters.
Rex Attributes in Risk of Rain 2
After unlocking Rex, you will need to master his attributes. This is necessary because Rex is a ranged survivor that, most times, causes damage to an enemy at the cost of its health. Fortunately, players can take advantage of the character’s healing abilities after receiving damages. Here are Rex's abilities you need to know before using him in the game.
- Natural Toxins: This passive skill of the survivor ensures that some of its attacks weaken the enemy by decreasing the damage and movement speed of its victim.
- DIRECTIVE: Inject: This is the primary ability of the character and it fires 3 syringes that deal 3×80 damage. The last hit gives Rex 60% of the damage dealt after weakening the enemy.
- DIRECTIVE: Drill: This secondary ability has a cool-down period of six seconds. It shoots several seed bullets into the sky. These bullets will rain down and cause 450% damage per second.
- Seed Barrage: This secondary ability costs 15% of the character’s health. It shoots mortars into the sky to deal 450% damage to the enemy.
- DIRECTIVE: Disperse: This is a utility skill that allows the survivor to fire a sonic boom. The boom reduces and repels all enemy hits, and if you're airborne, it pushes you backward. It has a cooldown period of five seconds.
- Bramble Volley: This utility skill collects 20% of your health to fire thorns that repel and decrease all enemy attacks after dealing 550% damage. The move can also push you backward if you're airborne and it heals for every target.
- DIRECTIVE: Harvest: This special skill shoots bolts that debuffs and harm the enemy. After the kill, the target drops fruit that restores 25% health.
- Tangling Growth: This special ability costs 25% of your health after firing a flower that deals 200% damage. The move heals for every hit.
