In total, there are eleven playable characters in Risk of Rain 2. These include Huntress, Commando, Captain, Bandit, Engineer, MUL-T, Mercenary, Artificer, Rex, Loader, and Acrid. Each of them has distinctive ways to help players unlock new levels and win the game.

Commando

Commando is the face of Risk of Rain and this means you get to unlock him by default. While Commando might look like a simple character, he has much potential as a powerhouse.

Commando is rather handy with simple mechanics and can adapt to any ability in no time at all. Since he's a default character, you don't need to do anything to unlock him.

Huntress

In the initial release of Risk of Rain 2, you needed to survive three stages without dying to unlock Huntress. But after a few updates, this charger became accessible by default, just like Commando.

Bandit

Engineer

Engineering Perfection requires you to complete thirty stages of the game to unlock Engineer. If you want to unlock Engineer faster, you can play on Drizzle difficulty but with a focus on teleporter events. This means you don't need to explore the map. Just make your way to the Teleporter quickly.

Mercenary

While you need to stay alive to unlock other characters, Mercenary requires you to end your run to unlock it. You must enter what is called a Celestial Portal and destroy your character through the Obelisk device. The Celestial Portal will return you to the third stage after one loop. You can do this five times to quickly unlock the Mercenary and gain some Lunar Coins along the way.

Artificer

Unlocking this character can be very frustrating as you need to have Lunar Coins which is a rare item to get from slain monsters. In total, you need eleven lunar coins to unlike the Artificer. You actually need ten to unlock the character outrightly but you must also pay one more for the Bazaar.

After getting the coins, you must open a portal to the Bazaar Between Time which you can do through a Newt Altar. Then you head to the merchant and interact with the frozen Artificer right beside them.

A simple hack to getting Lunar Coins is to use an Obelisk obliteration in the third stage.

Rex

Rex is one of the more difficult characters to unlock in Risk of Rain 2 because of how technical it can be to do so. To unlock, you must power up Rex during the Abyssal Depths stage. This means you must escort a Fuel Array through many stages from your drop pod. To locate the Fuel Array, you must interact with the panel in the back of your drop pod.

The downside to carrying a Fuel Array is that you explode when your health reaches below 50 percent. But this explosion must kill your character otherwise, you have failed the challenge.

Loader

Unlocking Loader is a rather technical issue. First, you have to spawn at Siren's Call and destroy five eggs nests which will reveal a unique boss called the Alloy Worship Unit. This boss delivers a high amount of damage with a high level of health.

After defeating this boss, it will spawn a rare item you just also defeat in an instant to unlock Loader.

Acrid

An elusive character, Acrid is one of the toughest characters to unlock in Risk of Rain 2. To unlock him, you must interact with a Newt Altar which spawns the Bazaar Between Time. After accessing the Bazaar, you must look for a cave entrance just under the spawn point.

After getting into the cave, you must enter the Null Portal where you will find the Void Fields. Here, you will face nine different challenges which reward you with some items and unlock Acrid for you.

Captain

Captain is the apex character in Risk of Rain 2; which means that to unlock the character, you need to beat the game! How do you do that? You need to reach Sky Meadow and fix the Teleporter to the moon which takes you to the last stage of the game called Commencement. You have to defeat a couple of extremely tough enemies and fight the final boss called Mithrix.

Defeating Mithrix doesn't mean you have beaten the game as you have to escape the moon before it blows itself up. Then you have to ride a rescue ship which you just also defend for one minute before you can finally beat the game and unlock Captain.



Other hidden characters like Void Fiend, Railgunner, and The Heretic can be unlocked by completing other tasks in the game.
