Nintendo Switch 2 will pit itself against Sony for the first time as Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to the Switch 2 console. This version will bundle in the Intermission DLC starring fan-favorite character Yuffie and was announced during the latest Switch 2 Direct.

The Remake launched first on PlayStation 4 in 2020 and was then updated to the current versions on PS5 and PC. The 1997 original has been out on Switch for a while now, but this is the first time Nintendo players have been able to enjoy the full-action spectacle of the rework that has changed the way the game is experienced by many.

Switch 2’s upgraded specs are also expected to help this be visually on par with the other PS5 and PC versions, so this could be the definitive version for fans. The announcement implies that Square Enix hasn’t confirmed a specific release date, but it will definitely make part of Switch 2’s launch lineup when the console drops on June 5, 2025.

The release is a big change for Square Enix, who said earlier this year that it would lean into a more multiplatform approach following Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's underwhelming response on PS5. While Remake on Switch 2 gives the game a wider range in terms of player base, it also provides Nintendo fans with a high-profile RPG out of the gate.

Further, it’s also a good sign that the Switch 2 will see more third party titles that were unavailable on other platforms, willing to work on the hybrid system, confusing console exclusivity further between generations.
