Hollow Knight Silksong Moss Grotto Full Guide

Hollow Knight was just brought to our consoles in September 2025, and after the long-awaited release, your first point of action is the Moss Grotto, a beautiful area that is dark and spooky.

The Silksong Moss Grotto is a great way for the game to introduce you to some of the new aspects of the new Hollow Knight game. You will encounter enemies and the game's first boss, so use this level to prepare and get used to the game controls and the feel of the new game.
In this guide, we go into depth on this lush green area, what to expect, and how to conquer this area with ease. If you are beginning your journey on this wonderful game, follow this guide for the best start possible.

Beginning the Moss Grotto Journey

When you first enter the Hollow Knight Silksong Moss Grotto, you will need to bind Hornet, which is the game’s protagonist. Once you have done this, you will notice the game wants you to continue to the left, but before you do this, make sure you go the opposite direction (to the right) into the first of the Moss Grotto secrets. This hidden area will hold your first collection of Shell Shards. These will help you craft and replenish the Hornets' items. There are not many here, but it's a nice start to your game, as you will need them later on.

Moving on, you will find vines blocking your route. Take a few slices of these, and you will be able to break through. This leads you into the Moss Grotto to begin your journey through Hollow Knight Silksong.

Introducing the Moss Grotto

Welcome to the Moss Grotto. You have now entered your first Hollow Knight Silksong area. Head left and you will instantly see your first little creatures. You will have to take a few swings at them with your needle to defeat them; these are not challenging, but still a minor hurdle to overcome.

After getting rid of the little grubs, you will reach a gap with water and stones to cross. However, do not worry, as you can swim in the water if you wish; this will not harm you. Once you have crossed the gap, there will be a bone bridge. What you may notice is that underneath the platform you are standing on, there is a large amount of space below; this is where you will need to head to move on to the next part of the Moss Grotto.

Take a swim underneath to reach the beginning of the next section, placing you onto a few floating platforms. Leap over these to get to the next section of your journey.

New Tactics, Enemies, and Sections

As you begin your journey down the level, you will be able to reach a cliff edge on the other side of the area that you are in. On this cliff rests a Mossberry. This is listed as toxic to creatures and can assist you on your travels, so make the jump over to grab this.

In this section, you will see your first new flying enemy. The best way to deal with these pesky creatures is to wait for them to dive down and attack. This is when it is best to counterattack and defeat them. This can be done with around 3 swipes of your needle.

Drop to the floor and head right to the next area. When reaching this section, Hornet will be overcome by a strange sense of agony, but do not worry, continue to advance.
You will notice the environment around you has begun to change, and a new enemy will reveal itself. These will move around on the platforms, and a simple dodge and three strikes will take them out. They are much more lively than others you would have met on this adventure so far.

The First Bench of your Journey

Take the floating platforms up, and you will see another Mossberry, but you will not be able to reach it at this moment, so continue to cross all of the gaps. Keep in mind that the pits will take you back down to the bottom of the grotto if you choose to.

After crossing some islands, branches and leaves will block your path, so, like at the beginning, you will have to slice your way through these. Through these bushes, there will be a ruined Chapel. The Hornet will start to feel an even more uneasy pain, but once again, continue as there is a warm bench waiting for you at the end of the room. Use it to heal, get ready, and save your game.

Keep going up the level, slicing through more bushes, and you will find yourself in the boss's room. Here, you will find the Moss Mother. She is an easy boss to defeat and gets you ready for some of the bosses you will have to face in the future.

Safe Haven

After winning your fight with the Moss mother, you can raise yourself to the top of the large, open column, where Hornet will again be overcome with devastating pain, which will finally lead to Hornet passing out. When you wake up, you will be met with a lovely-natured creature, the Chapel Maid, who will explain that this fight was just the beginning of the long, perilous journey, so follow the route to Bone Bottom, and get ready for the journey you have ahead.

Now, the Silksong Moss Grotto is one of the easiest sections you pass through, but it is the perfect introduction to the world you will be exploring in the future. Hopefully, with this guide, you will find this a great introduction to Silksong and have an easy time navigating this first level.
