The Allure of the Axe: Woodie's Starting Perks
Woodie embarks on the adventure with Lucy, a sentient talking axe. Lucy has a few features:
- Unbreakable Durability: Unlike other axes, Lucy never breaks. You can chop endlessly without replacements.
- Quickened Chopping Time: Lucy only requires a few swings to chop trees compared to ordinary axes. This means quickened resource collection and less time spent during the crafting of new tools.
- Additional Texture: Lucy will provide live commentary and encouragement during a game, adding a bit of personality to the experience of playing Woodie.
But he soon finds out that Lucy comes with a high price: an activated curse which he transforms under some specific circumstances.
The Curse of the Werebeaver: A Boon or a Bane?
Woodie's curse has three hideous forms: Werebeaver, Weremoose, and Weregoose. Each begets special powers but at the same time a share of negatives.
- Werebeaver: A wonder about lumberjacking, the Werebeaver is great at collecting resources. It falls trees at a stunning pace and builds Beaver Dams to gather logs and create ponds. The only thing that doesn't work so well about the Werebeaver is that it's a vegetarian, not able to eat meat, and so must find something to sustain it through the transformation.
- Weremoose: Strong, with the ability to take out most enemies through his very strong charge attack, the Weremoose even does pretty well against fire and ice attacks, but he is not very agile and cannot cut trees or craft items.
- The Weregoose: A nimble flier, the Weregoose can take to the sky to avoid danger or reach areas previously out of reach. He can also lay eggs that will hatch into helpful Goose Helpers. Unfortunately, the Weregoose is the weakest of the transformations and offers little in the way of combat.
Managing the Curse: Transformations and the Wereness Meter
Transformations are enabled by Woodie's Were-Meter, which is filled by:
- Chop down the trees and up the meter quickly with Lucy.
- Monster Meat meal (great increase)
- When Full Moon (automatic change)
Here are some tips for managing the Wereness Meter:
- Chopping Specialist: When you need to occasionally chop, use a regular axe and avoid getting the meter full too fast.
- Monitor Your Hunger Level: It's about time you turn it around when your hunger is low to avert food waste.
- Embrace the Full Moon: Sometimes, when the moon is full, you can embrace that as an opportunity to transform into the desired form to achieve certain tasks.
Woodie's Skill Tree: Unlocking New Abilities
The recent update of Skill Tree in Don't Starve Together brought in lots of additional perks to make Woodie's gameplay even more interesting. Now, perks are available in several various branches which may be tailored to make the Woodie abilities look in general like the player. Below are some of the major perks:
- Transformation Mastery: Domination of transformation enhances the strengths of each Wereform to perform his or her task more effectively.
- Quick Picker: Gathering Resources while Transformed is done at a much faster pace.
- Wood Worker: A bonus while chopping wood and working on craft goods made out of wood.
- Shadow Affinity and Lunar Affinity: Increase in performance between the dark and full moon phases.
Use the Skill Tree to invest Insight Points wisely and unlock perks matching your favorite way of playing Woodie.
Transformations are random, but you can affect your chances by maintaining a careful Wereness Meter. Chopping down trees with Lucy on your person will increase the chances of transforming into the Werebeaver form, as will eating
Monster Meat.
The Werebeaver can't eat meat; hence, one has to look for other sources of food if one intends to remain transformed for a long time. The player also cannot craft things when in Werebeaver form.
The Weremoose, however, is a master of clearing large waves of enemies. Use his heavy attack in charge and make strategic transformations in between boss fights or hound waves.
